Spot Starts: August 4, 2008

Spot starts is a daily series that I will be starting up here at Fantasy Baseball Flash, to help fantasy baseball owners in daily leagues determine which pitchers they may want to roster for a spot-start that day. Owners in leagues that have inning maximums should be careful of their limit. Using spot-start pitchers is a highly effective way to get good numbers out of one pitching spot.

Today’s spot start is:
Gil Meche, Kansas City Royals. Over Meche’s last three starts, he is a stellar 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA. Even more than that, his strikeout to walk ratio shows great dominance (18 strikeouts to 4 walks). In his career against the Red Sox, Meche is 4-2 with a 3.68 ERA, along with a 38-15 K/BB ratio.

Meche has a 9-9 record with a 4.22 ERA to date, which may mask his hot streak and overall value. Despite going against the high powered Red Sox, Meche is the best candidate today that you should consider spot starting.

Today’s long shot is:
Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds. It looks like Arroyo is starting to put his season together, but he has done it rather quietly on a small-market Reds squad. Over his past three games, he has posted a 2-1 record with a 4.64 ERA, which may look like average numbers on the surface. His K/BB ratio tells the story (14-1), which means that he is dominating hitters in every facet.

I would look for his ERA and WHIP to drop a good deal before the season is up. Arroyo is 9-8 with a scary 5.74 ERA on the season, but he is due for a correction. If you feel like rolling the dice, pick up Arroyo and spot start him against the Brewers today.
